Notice of Mail Ballot Voting for Assent Voting

The Regional District of Nanaimo will include Mail Ballot Voting as part of the 2016 Electoral Area 'B' Transit Contribution Assent Voting. Qualified electors in Electoral Area 'B' may vote by mail if they:
  • have a physical disability, illness or injury that affects their ability to vote at another voting opportunity; and/or
  • expect to be absent from the Regional District of Nanaimo on general voting day (February 13, 2016) and at the times of all advance voting opportunities (February 3 and 10, 2016); and/or
  • are a resident of DeCourcy Island or Mudge Island, which have been designated as remote from voting places.
In addition to the above requirements, a person must meet all voting requirements for voting in the assent voting as a resident elector or as a non-resident property elector as of the date the mail ballot is completed and posted.

Requesting A Mail Ballot Package:

To request a mail ballot package you must submit a completed Application to Vote by Mail to the Regional District of Nanaimo, Administrative Services Department, at 6300 Hammond Bay Road, Nanaimo, BC V9T 6N2. Applications can be obtained by contacting the Administrative Services Department at the above address or by calling 250-390-4111, toll free 1-877-607-4111 or by downloading the form from the 2016 Electoral Area 'B' Transit Contribution Assent Voting by Clicking Here. Applications may be submitted in person, by mail to the above address, by fax to 250-390-4163, or by email to [email protected]. Upon receipt of a complete application, your name will be added to the mailing list for mail ballot packages and a mail ballot package will be mailed to you as soon as they are available (tentatively January 4, 2016).

Important Deadline

As provided in the Local Government Act, a mail ballot must be received by the Chief Election Officer before the close of voting on general voting day (Saturday, February 13, 2016) in order to be counted for the assent voting. It is your responsibility to deliver or post the mail ballot in sufficient time for delivery to the Regional District of Nanaimo, 6300 Hammond Bay Road, Nanaimo, BC V9T 6N2.

List of Registered Electors
Beginning Tuesday, December 29, 2015, until the close of general voting for the assent voting on Saturday, February 13, 2016, a copy of the list of registered electors will be available for public inspection at the Administrative Services Department of the Regional District of Nanaimo located at 6300 Hammond Bay Road, Nanaimo, BC during regular office hours: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 8:30 am - 4:30 pm; and Wednesday from 8:30 am - 5:30 pm, excluding statutory holidays. Before inspecting the list, a person must sign a statement that they will not inspect the list or use the information included in the list except for the purposes of Part 3 - Electors and Elections of the Local Government Act. In accordance with Section 63 of the Local Government Act, an elector may request that personal information about them be omitted from or obscured on the list of registered electors.
Objection to Registration of an Elector
An objection to the registration of a person whose name appears on the list of registered electors may be made in accordance with Section 64 of the Local Government Act until 4:00 pm, Friday, January 8, 2016. An objection must be in writing and may only be made by a person entitled to be registered as an elector of the regional district electoral area, and can only be made on the basis that a person whose name appears on the list of electors has died or is not qualified to be registered as an elector of the regional district electoral area.
