Agricultural Area Plan Implementation
Background
The Regional District of Nanaimo (RDN) Agricultural Area Plan (AAP) was adopted in October 2012. The AAP includes 128 recommended Action Items that originated through extensive public and stakeholder consultation with the local farming community, AAC input, and Board review. In the months following the AAP adoption, the Agricultural Advisory Committee (AAC) reviewed the AAP’s 128 recommended Action Items with the intent of identifying those which were of highest priority to consider within the first work plan. The result of the AAC review was a list of 68 priority Action Items to be considered within the first work plan. The priority Action Items represent a broad range of topics related to agriculture and aquaculture in the region. Staff was tasked with organizing the priority Action Items into projects and tasks which could be included within the first work plan. The result was an Implementation Action Plan for the first three-year work period from 2014 to 2016.
The Action Plan, which identifies six projects, represents how the RDN will work towards implementing the Agricultural Area Plan. The diagram below illustrates the relationship between the Agricultural Area Plan and the 2014 – 2016 Action Plan. Click on each shape to find out more information.
