Top 5 Climate Actions in Your Home

According to NOAA and NASA data, the Earth's average surface temperature has increased by about 0.8° Celsius (1.4° Fahrenheit) since 1900. The warmest global average temperatures on record have all occurred within the past 15 years, with the warmest two years being 1998 and 2005. Most of the warming in recent decades is likely the result of human activities. Other aspects of the climate are also changing such as rainfall patterns, snow and ice cover, and sea level.

The good news is we’re not alone. People, communities, cities, businesses, schools, faith groups and other organizations are taking action. Here’s a few was that you can make a difference, too!

Things We Can All Do

No. 1 Green your commute. In the region, 66% of GHG emissions is contributed to on-road transportation. There are many ways to reduce your transportation emissions that will help you be healthier and save money, such as:
  • Take public transit. Nanaimo Regional Transit's bus fleet now runs on Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) reducing the carbon footprint and operating costs.
  • Ride a bike
  • Car-share
  • Switch to an electric or hybrid vehicle
  • Fly less ( and off-set carbon emissions when flying)
No. 2 Insulate your home, clean your air/ furnace filters and install energy efficient devices. Check out the RDN Green Building Rebate as you may be eligible for funding to help you make your home more environmentally friendly. No. 3 Recycle your home's waste newsprints, cardboard, plastic, glass, metal, etc. Unsure of what you can recycle? Use the RDN's online search engine "What Goes Where" to help figure out what items go in the Blue, Green and Garbage Bins or to find a recycling center near you.
No. 4 Switch out incandescent light bulbs to LEDs and CFL. The standard 60 and 40 watt bulbs are less energy efficient and are scheduled to be phased out. There's no need to hoard bulbs as tests show LEDs and CFL are light years ahead of the old bulbs.

Shopping Tip: Excessive heat can shorten the life of LEDs and CFLs, so check out the Consumer Report light bulb ratings for bulbs that can be used in fully enclosed fixtures.

No. 5 BUY and EAT local is an easy and fun way to support area businesses and reduce your climate footprint. The region produces some of the most diverse products, food items and establishments, including farmers' markets, food vendors, restaurants and micro breweries. There is always something new to try!
